HISTORY OF THE ART OF GLASS PRODUCTION
A decree by the Council of the Serenissima Republic of Venice on the 8th of November 1921 arranged that the glass furnaces should be in Murano island.Murano had all the ideal characteristics for the development of the glass handicraft: it protected the urban centre of Venice from fires and noxious fumes and at the same time it was close to the commercial centre and port of Venice. From the 13th century Murano glass art has been divided between the common production and the artistic production. In fact the blown glasses include a very large production: from bottles to precious vases, from the mirrors to the windows. In the 16th century Venice was the only place where the first quality mirrors could be bought, famous especially for their big sizes.Between the 18th and 19th century, with the French Revolution, the reduction of mass production leaves place for the quality artistic creations for national and international customers.Nowadays Murano glass art is famous all over the world for its characteristic of beauty and quality.
